My Simple Content Creation Setup for Beginners at 54 — What I Actually Use and What I Wish I Had Bought First

If you are trying to figure out the right content creation setup for beginners without wasting money on gear you do not need this post is for you.

In this post you will learn:

  • Why you do not need expensive gear to start creating content
  • The exact tripod, lighting and microphone I use for UGC and social media
  • The money I wasted before I found what actually works
  • What I would buy first if I were starting from scratch today

Starting content creation can feel overwhelming. When I first looked into it I thought I needed everything. A camera. A full lighting setup. Expensive gear. Editing tools I did not understand.

So I did what most people do. I started buying what influencers were recommending. And honestly I wasted money. I went through multiple tripods, microphones and lights before I finally found what actually works.

What I have learned is this. You do not need more. You just need better choices from the start. This is the exact setup I use now to film my UGC content, my social media videos, and everything I create for brands and my Amazon storefront. It is simple, beginner friendly, and it works.

Why you do not need a complicated setup

There is so much noise around what you need to start. Perfect lighting. Expensive cameras. Full studio setups. The truth is none of that matters if it stops you from actually creating.

What matters is ease. If your setup is frustrating you will avoid it. If it is simple you will use it. That is why every tool I use now solves a specific problem I ran into early on. Nothing is in my setup that does not earn its place.

This is especially true if you are building a UGC business. Brands are not paying for perfection. They are paying for authentic, consistent, clear content from real people. A simple setup that you actually use will always outperform an elaborate setup that intimidates you into not showing up.

The tripod that actually makes filming easy

I cannot tell you how many times I pinched my fingers using those old phone clip tripods. The first one I bought did not have a magnetic attachment. It was flimsy, hard to adjust, and every time I tried to set it up it felt like a battle I was losing before I even started filming.

The Kraftgeek tripod I use now is completely different. It has a magnetic attachment so your phone just snaps into place with no clips and no frustration. The best part is that it opens up instantly when it touches the ground so there is zero setup time. I go from not filming to filming in about ten seconds which sounds small but makes an enormous difference to how often you actually show up and create.

If you are constantly adjusting your phone or avoiding filming because the setup feels like a hassle this is the upgrade that fixes that problem entirely.

The lighting that instantly improves your videos

Lighting is one of the fastest ways to improve your content and one of the easiest things to get wrong when you are starting out.

My first ring light was not plug in which meant I always had to use a USB converter. It was bright but somehow still not bright enough and it gave off a blue tone that reflected in my videos. It just never looked right no matter how I positioned it.

I now use two options depending on what I am filming. For full body or wider shots I use the Weilisi taller ring light which is plug in, consistent, and gives even flattering light without shadows. For closer talking head shots I use the shorter ring light which is compact, easy to position, and makes everything look more polished without trying too hard.

If your videos feel dull or uneven lighting is almost always the reason. You do not need a full studio. You just need one good light that actually works.

The microphone that changed everything

This one took me the longest to figure out and cost me the most money in the process.

I started with a ten dollar mic. The sound was muffled and picked up everything around me including the refrigerator, the air conditioning, and whatever was happening outside. Then I upgraded to a mid range mic that cost around thirty five dollars. It was better but it broke after six months. Looking back I would have saved money and frustration if I had just invested in a good microphone from the beginning.

The mic I use now is the DJI Mic Mini and it is genuinely in a different category from everything I tried before it. It is wireless which means no cables getting in the way, the audio is clear and clean, and it cuts background noise without any extra effort or editing on my end. I clip it on and forget about it.

Audio matters more than most beginners realise. If your sound is off people scroll. If your sound is clear people stay and listen. For UGC content specifically brands notice audio quality immediately because your videos are going into their ads. The DJI Mic Mini is the single upgrade that had the most immediate impact on the quality of everything I create.

What I would buy first if I were starting from scratch

If you are starting from zero and want to keep it simple here is the order I would do it in.

Start with the Kraftgeek tripod. This removes the biggest barrier to actually filming which is the frustration of setting up your phone every time. When filming is easy you do it more often and consistency is what builds your portfolio and your income.

Next get a light. The Weilisi taller ring light is what I would start with if you are only getting one. It instantly improves how your content looks and that improvement translates directly into more professional looking videos without changing anything else about how you film.

Then invest in the DJI Mic Mini. Save up for this one if you need to because it is worth every penny. This is what takes your content from average to polished and it is the upgrade that brands and viewers notice most.

A note on using this setup for UGC specifically

If you are building a UGC business like I am this setup is everything you need to get started and land your first brand deals. I use this exact combination for every campaign I create and it has been more than enough to meet brand briefs and deliver professional quality content.

If you are new to UGC and want to understand how to get started before you invest in gear read my full beginner guide here first. And if you are trying to figure out which platforms to use to find brand deals my honest review of every platform I have tried is here.

You do not need to be tech savvy to start creating content. You do not need a perfect setup. And you definitely do not need to waste money figuring it out the hard way the way I did. You just need tools that make it easier to show up consistently. That is what this setup does for me every single day and it is what it will do for you too.

I started this whole journey at 54 with no tech background, no following, and no idea what I was doing. If this setup works for me it will work for you. The only thing that matters is that you start.
