Reinventing Life & Income at 54 — My $15K Online Income Experiment

When my two sons left for college and my husband and I became empty nesters, I realized something I wasn’t prepared for. That moment is what started my journey of reinventing life at 54 and everything that has come from it since.

Reinventing Life at 54: When Everything Changed

I have two boys. My oldest, Connor, is 23, and Riley is 21 and finishing his senior year of college. Growing up, they both played travel and school sports, which meant our family life revolved around practices, games, tournaments, and nonstop schedules. My husband and I were always on the move, cheering them on and supporting whatever they were passionate about.

Then suddenly, that season of life changed.

When both of my boys left home for college and we officially became empty nesters, it hit me harder than I expected. For years my identity had been built around being a mom and a wife. I had also worked my way up the corporate ladder earlier in my career, but when the boys reached middle school I made the decision to step back and stay home with them.

And when that chapter closed, I realized something uncomfortable.

Asking the Question: What Comes Next?

I wasn’t sure who I was anymore outside of those roles.

So I started asking myself a question I think many women reach at some point:

Who am I now?

And maybe even more importantly…

What comes next?

That question is what started my reinvention.

I’m 54, and I’ve decided this next chapter of my life will be about building something of my own again financially, personally, and creatively.

I’m learning how to build income online through blogging, affiliate marketing, and digital platforms while also focusing on staying strong and healthy in midlife.

This blog is where I document that journey in real time.

Discovering a New Possibility

I knew one thing for certain, I didn’t want to start over again in a corporate setting.

As I searched for what might come next, I often found myself passing time scrolling through social media. One day I came across a woman talking about how she was making money online by monetizing her social media platforms.

She explained that she earned income by recommending products she already used and loved, sometimes directly through brands and sometimes through Amazon. She called it affiliate marketing.

If you’re curious about the different ways people are building income online, I put together a list of 6 Ways I’m Building Online Income at 54.

I started researching what affiliate marketing actually was and how people were using it to build income online. Before long, I was spending hours reading articles, watching videos, and trying to understand how this whole world worked.

At 54, I began the process of reinventing my life and exploring new ways to build income online. Eventually I decided to invest in a course on digital marketing so I could better understand how people were monetizing social media and building online businesses.

Facing the Fear of Starting Something New

To be honest, it was overwhelming at first.

First there was the fear of people seeing me on social media. What would they think? What would they say? I started a new TikTok and a new Instagram and blocked everyone I knew, even my contacts.

Then there was the fear of failure.

The Gen X generation didn’t grow up filming our teenage years and sharing everything online, so to say that showing myself on camera was uncomfortable is an understatement.

Realizing Something Was Possible

But the more I researched and learned, the more I began to understand something important.

Building a diversified income online was actually possible.

Why I Started This Blog

This blog is where I document my reinvention in real time.

My goal is to build $15,000 in online income this year while sharing exactly how I’m doing it, the wins, the lessons, and the experiments along the way.

Here are the main ways I’m currently working toward that goal:

Affiliate Marketing

Throughout my blog posts I will share products that I personally use, love, and would genuinely recommend. When appropriate, I may include affiliate links to those products. If someone chooses to purchase through one of those links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to them.

Amazon Influencer Storefront

I also have an Amazon storefront where I share products I recommend and use in my everyday life.

UGC (User Generated Content) Partnerships

UGC stands for User Generated Content. This involves creating content for brands that showcases how their products or services work in real life. Brands use this type of content in their marketing and advertising.

Pinterest Traffic

I’m learning how to use Pinterest as a search platform to drive traffic to helpful blog posts and resources.

Social Media Monetization

Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok offer creator monetization programs where creators can earn income from their content once accepted into those programs.

The Other Part of My Reinvention

While building income online is one part of my next chapter, there’s another piece that matters just as much to me.

Staying strong and healthy in midlife.

I share the habits and routines that help me maintain energy and strength as I move through this season of life, including strength training, nutrition, and supplements that support overall wellness.

Because reinvention isn’t just about income.

It’s about creating a life that feels strong, balanced, and intentional.

Following the Journey

If you’re also navigating midlife and wondering what comes next, you’re not alone.

I’m sharing everything I’m learning as I build this next chapter, from online income experiments to the habits helping me stay strong in midlife.

If you’d like to follow along, I created a free guide where I share the first steps I took to start building income online.
