How I Choose Beauty Products for Women Over 50
At 54, I am not interested in chasing every viral beauty product or turning my routine into a second job. I want products that work for my skin, fit into my real life, and earn their place in my bathroom, makeup bag, or suitcase. Here are 8 beauty products I’m actually using at 54.
Some of these are affordable. A few are more of a splurge. What they have in common is that I have actually used them long enough to form an opinion. These are not products I ordered just to make a list.
Below are eight beauty products I am using now, including the serum I have already repurchased, the cleansing balms that changed my opinion about double cleansing, and a few practical products that make travel and busy days easier.

Medicube EGF NAD+ Firming Serum
I am on my second bottle of the Medicube EGF NAD+ Firming Serum, which should tell you how I feel about it. I have been using it for about five months, and I have noticed that my skin looks plumper and has a healthy glow. I also think my skin looks firmer since I added it to my routine.
I apply it after cleansing and before my moisturizer and SPF. It layers easily into the routine I already have, which matters because I am far more likely to keep using a product when it does not make everything else complicated.
This is the product on the list I would point to first for someone who wants a serum that feels like a meaningful step in a mature-skin routine without adding five more products.

Juno and Co and Farmacy Cleansing Balms
I used to think all the excitement around double cleansing was mostly hype. Then I tried it consistently, and I changed my mind. I have been double cleansing at night for about five years, and I have experienced far fewer breakouts since I started.
The first cleanse is where a balm earns its keep. It breaks down eye makeup, SPF, and the rest of my makeup before I follow with my regular cleanser. I included two options because both work very well, but they sit at different price points.
Juno and Co Clean 10 Cleansing Balm is the more budget-conscious choice. Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm is the splurge. Both smell wonderful to me, melt down stubborn makeup, and make that first cleanse feel less like a chore.
If you are new to double cleansing, choose the one that fits your budget. The important part is not owning both. It is finding one you enjoy enough to use consistently.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant
I have tried a lot of exfoliators, and Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant beats the others for me by far. This is one of the products I do not plan to stray from.
It begins as a fine powder, then mixes with water to create a gentle exfoliating cleanser. For me, it does an excellent job of removing dead skin and surface buildup. My skin feels smoother, looks brighter, and I have noticed fewer breakouts when I keep it in my routine.
Despite the word “daily” in the name, I do not use it every day. Two or three times a week works well for my skin. That is an important reminder that the best routine is the one your own skin tolerates, not necessarily the maximum frequency printed on the bottle.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner
I began using The Ordinary Glycolic Acid about two years ago because I was dealing with underarm odor and discoloration. I sweat a lot when I work out, and perimenopause night sweats added another layer to the problem.
With regular use, I noticed a real difference in odor, and the discoloration under my arms is now gone. I also find it useful during the summer and in hotter climates, when sweat tends to show up in more places than we would like to discuss at dinner.
This is not an antiperspirant, and this is simply my personal experience. Glycolic acid can irritate sensitive or freshly shaved skin, so patch test first, avoid broken or irritated skin, and use sun protection when applying an AHA to areas that will be exposed to the sun.

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Body Lotion
I was introduced to Kiehl’s Crème de Corps about a year ago, and this stuff is magic on my dry, cracked heels. It is rich without making body care feel fussy, and it leaves the driest areas of my skin feeling softer and smoother.
My cracked-heel tip is to pair it with The Ordinary Glycolic Acid. I let the glycolic acid dry, then follow with the Kiehl’s lotion. The combination has made my heels feel smooth as butter.
Keep the glycolic acid away from open cracks or irritated skin, and patch test the combination before turning it into a routine. If your feet are painful, bleeding, or not improving, skip the experiment and speak with a healthcare professional.

L’Oréal Infallible Setting Spray
L’Oréal Infallible Setting Spray is my go-to on days when I do not want my makeup to move. I love it because it gives my makeup staying power and has held up remarkably well for me around water.
I took it to Mexico over the summer, where it had to deal with hot sun, humidity, and time in the pool. It performed beautifully. That trip took it from “a setting spray I like” to a product I know I can reach for when I need my makeup to last.
I still apply it according to the directions and keep it away from my eyes, but when the weather or the day is going to test my makeup, this is the bottle I pack.

The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Facial Wipes
The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Cleansing Facial Wipes are my travel go-to because they are easy to pack and useful when I need a quick cleanup. I also keep them in my car because I like to be prepared.
They remove everything from waterproof mascara to smudge-proof lipstick in just a few swipes. They have a mild scent, and they do not leave my skin feeling dried out.
At home, I still prefer my full evening cleanse. For travel days, the gym, or the moments when convenience is the difference between removing my makeup and falling asleep in it, these are incredibly practical.

The products that earned a place
This is what beauty looks like for me at 54: a mix of skincare, makeup, and body products that solve real problems and fit into the life I am actually living. I do not need every product to be luxurious, and I do not need every step to be complicated. I need it to be useful.
If you are building or editing your own routine, start with the problem you want to solve and add one product at a time. Give your skin time to respond, pay attention to irritation, and keep what genuinely makes a difference for you.
Product experiences are personal and are not medical advice. Patch test new skincare, follow product directions, and consult a qualified professional about persistent skin concerns.
